Block board vs plywood: which should you use?

Both are wood panels, but they are built differently — and each is better at different jobs.

Block board vs plywood: which should you use?

Plywood is made from thin wood veneers glued in alternating directions. Block board has a core of solid timber strips sandwiched between veneers. That difference in construction decides where each one works best.

Choose block board for long spans

The timber core keeps block board straight over long lengths, so it is ideal for long shelves, wall cabinets, tables and bed panels that must not sag. It is also lighter than plywood of the same thickness and holds screws firmly.

Choose plywood for strength and moisture

Plywood’s cross-laminated veneers make it stronger in every direction and more stable where humidity changes. It is the better choice for kitchens and bathrooms — in BWR or BWP grade — and for carcasses that carry heavy loads.

A simple rule

  • Long shelves, wardrobe shutters and tables — block board
  • Kitchen carcasses — BWR plywood
  • Sink units and bathrooms — PF / BWP plywood
  • Wardrobe and bed carcasses — MR plywood or block board

Duro Block Board and Duro MR Grade Ply are ISI certified.
